EP Review: Deco Greene - Breathe

'Breathe' is a really solid four track EP from flourishing Dublin troubadour Deco Greene.
Worth checking out.

There's a lovely almost nostalgic feeling I get while listening to Deco Greene's delicate debut EP entitled 'Breathe'. It could well be that the EP would fit in very well in the Irish music scene ten years ago that was built from the success of Damien Rice, Mundy, Glen Hansard and the like. However, as we all know singer-songwriters are less ridiculed these days and more importantly the good ones are very difficult to find. 'Breathe' pushes Deco Greene into the spotlight with four well written mature tunes that deserve to be heard by the masses.

The title track is simply gorgeous. Backed by the right amount of strings it's a very positive, re-affirming track that I'd listen to time and time again ..........

The other three songs are solid enough tunes which supports the title track fairly well to complete the EP. 'Release' has a more full band pop feel which ups the tempo of the EP. Ballad 'Love Crime' trickles along nicely and showcases Deco's fine vocals. The album closer fails to come close to the quality of Release or Breathe but is a relatively solid enough end to a good EP.

Live Review: Johnny Flynn - Whelans, Dublin October 16th

Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit were such a revelation last night in a heaving, hot Whelans that this could well be my favourite gig on 2013.

Photo Credit: Anto Kane Photography       http://www.antokanephotography.com/

Supporting the release of his most recent album 'Country Mile', this trip to Dublin proved very successful for Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit with Whelans crammed full of real 'Flynner' fans. The set list was taken mainly from the new album with I think every one of them wonderful tracks getting an airing. Standout tracks from the set included the beautiful 'Einstein's Idea' that I shared last week on the blog and the album's title track.

The 'Sussex Wit' were a tight band but the real star is Johnny with them distinct old school deep rich vocals, the story telling in the songs and that shy persona that many new folk stars have. [See Ben Howard!]

What I adore about Johnny Flynn is the extra 'Beirut' sounding layer that many of the new songs on 'Country Mile' has. Songs like 'The Lady Has Risen' sounded like a real breath of fresh air that if there was any justice in the music world would see Mr Flynn hit the heights of Mr Howard or Mumford & Sons.

Do yourself a huge favour by buying 'Country Mile' and going to see Johnnny Flynn the next time he's in your town. Buy the album: http://www.johnny-flynn.com/

Album Review: Red Queen Contest - Self-titled

Navan Alternative Rock band 'Red Queen Contest' release their amazing debut album this week with this reviewer proud that it lives up to the band's obvious raw potential.

'Red Queen Contest' are a band with firm foundations. They've played together for years with hundreds of gigs and a few different band names under their belt. Always a band to show real potential when I seen them live back in 2010, I was intrigued to find out if or when an album was going to appear and if it did the band any justice?

This self-titled debut showcases the band's ability to write great songs, their fine musicianship and their dual lead vocals from the two guitarists which elevates the band way above the ordinary. It's a great album that completely live's up to the band's early promise a number of years ago.

The most enjoyable aspect of the album for me is that it's varied in sound and texture. Some tracks are straight up edgy indie rock songs, while others include a fair amount of electronica as well as the mid album acoustic track entitled 'Back To Your Door'. The acoustic track divides up the album nicely and splits up two of the best tracks on the album 'Rosalee' and 'Eiderdown'.

My favourite track off the album is 'Rabbit's Feet' for it's quirky lyrics and great vocals. Overall there's not a bad track on the album. It's one of the most complete, satisfying rock albums I'm likely to hear in a long time.

Album Review: Baum - Self-titled

'Baum' the self-titled second solo album from Switzerland's Baum is such an intense ride that's about new beginnings, reflective feelings and difficult separations. It's simply brilliant from start to finish.

From a blogger's perspective I am privileged to hear a lot of new music before the general public gets to hear them. In the case of this album I've been listening to this on and off for a good six months in anticipation of it's worldwide or European release. However, so far this album is only available at Baum's concerts with a release date planned for the near future.

I was fortunate enough to see Baum in concert about three years ago and his intensity, musicianship and songwriting blew me away. The debut album "Music for my Landloard" is one of my all time favourite album for it's sensitivity and sentiments. It was charming and appealing with feel good tales of joy. In contrast, this album is about personal pain and despair. It's harder, harsh at times and so intense in the middle tracks on the album. It talks of missed opportunities and reminisces of near perfect pasts. It's an album of reflective moods that work together to form a masterpiece of an album.

As an art-form this album works. From the pop radio friendly opener 'Damn', through songs like 'Crow', 'Sad' and 'I Cannot Sleep' we see Baum on a journey through some difficult times which culminates in a wonderful version of Dylans 'I Shall be Released' before we get to a delicate ending of epic proportions in 'Center of Town'.

While the songs are all from Baum himself, this album has the feel of a 'band collaboration' and therefore is not a conventional 'Singer-songwriter' album. In fact like many greats, it's hard to label a genre to what Baum does so effectively.

Song that have embedded themselves in me through the months of listening to this album include 'Sleep Now' and the wonderfully written song 'Paris' where we find Baum in reflective mode after the end of a marriage.
..."and I am riding backwards to Paris for a day.". My favourite track is the 'Center of Town' track that brings the album to an epic close. Dare I say it but it's almost 'Buckley-esque' in so many ways.

Keep an eye on http://baummusic.com/ or https://www.facebook.com/baummusic for details of where you can buy this incredible album.

Album Review: Kate O'Callaghan - The Still Beyond

'The Still Beyond', the debut album from Donegal songstress is an album of folk tunes that's warm, inviting, charming and delicate. A stunning debut album.

'The Still Beyond' is Kate O'Callaghan accompanied by various musicians proving a blissful soundtrack to her delicate tales of love, desire and relationships that read like poems in the liner notes. When sung by Kate the lyrics come to life and envelop your mind. These are well written songs open to interpretation over delicate music in the form of acoustic guitar, violin, double bass, organ and ukulele.

Songs that impress include 'Reverie of a Radiant Knight' where Kate sings about ... "how beautiful life will be" or 'My Dear' about the pain of being away from a loved one. I love the delicacy of 'Coldness at Dawn' with it's empowering positive lyrics. My favourite song off the album is the jazzy track entitled 'Feel' which suits Kate's vocals with some great lyrics ....

'The Still Beyond' is a great collection of songs, perfect to unwind to and listen as background music and even better to actively listen to.

2Day's Tune: Christy Moore - Arthur's Day

I've a feeling this might not get much radio play in Ireland but Christy Moore's insight in Arthur's Day deserves your attention ....

http://www.christymoore.com/

Song available on i Tunes 26/9/13.
Taken from the album 'Where I Come From' - out 1/11/13

(1)
Diageo Diageo have mounted a Crusade
creating Arthur's Day they've suckered us into their charade
start 'em off on Alco-Pops tastes just like lemonade
get 'em into the hit while they're young and none the wiser

(2)
Diageo pump the volume up on Arthur's Day
with The Manic Street Preachers, Primal Scream, Tom Jones and David Gray
to flog their alcohol they're revvin the youngsters up for a mighty spree
Twitter and Facebook tellin them where The Mumfords 'r gonna be

(Chorus)
Happy Happy Happy Happy Arthur's Day
Its such.... a Happy Clappy Advertisin Scheme
Drink sensibly they implore us, as their Hosannas sound a never-ending chorus
'n kids get hooked on the fantasies that flash before us

(3)
Arthurs Alcoholiday is comin round again
he's the patron saint of porter canonized by the Advertisin' Men
the medics in the ambulance 'll be workin overtime,
the A&E 'll be like a drunk tank in the firing line
while Diageo goes AWOL at closing time

Album Review: Ultan Conlon - Songs of Love So Cruel

Rarely has an album title adequately summed up the mood and concept of an album. 'Songs of Love So Cruel' is a wonderful album full of warm, charming tales of heartbreak.

Galway's finest singer-songwriter Ultan Conlon has made an album to comfort those out there heartbroken. It's a concept album of anti-love songs packaged in a warm, charming soundtrack of folk music that is both contemporary and also has it's roots firmly in the 50s and 60s.

Every song is beautifully written with some really great tunes on 'Songs of Love So Cruel'. Sabrina Dineen co sings 'The River Flows & The Woods Creep' which is as good a song you'll hear anywhere this year. Other stand-out tracks include 'In The Mad', the first single 'Lonely Avenue' and my personal favourite 'Bristlecone Pines' for the line ...
"If You Go I'll Love You For All Time, If You Stay Here We Will Only Fight"

To make an album of heartbreaking love songs that sounds this good is a wonderful achievement for Ultan Conlon. It would probably mean more to me if I was in that heartbreaking position myself. As it is, for the musicianship, lyrics, vocals and charm I'd highly recommend you check out this album.

Ultan Conlon - Songs of Love So Cruel [10 out of 12]

2Day's Tune: The Henry Girls - Home

Apart from the huge international success of Irish bands like Kodaline, Little Green Cars, The Strypes, Ryan Sheridan, Villagers [Mercury Nod Again!] .... a huge amount of Irish bands are heading for Europe to tour to audiences that love our artists. For example, David Hope is currently selling out venues in Switzerland, A Band Called Wanda are just back from Sweden and Donegal's 'The Henry Girls' are heading to Germany next week for this tour:

2Day's Tune: Roisin & The Beards - The Good Times

German folk-pop band with an Irish singer 'Róisín & The Beards' have a 'Pledge Music' campaign to get their debut album mastered & pressed which can be found here: http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/rnbs

Here's The Pledge

Here's a nice 'Videosong' for the band's single 'The Good Times' where

"1. what you see is what you hear (no lip-syncing for instruments or voice).
2. if you hear it, at some point you see it (no hidden sounds)."

2Day's Tune: James Canty - Sharks in the Shallows

I seen James Canty support The Staves in the Pepper Canister Church on Friday night and he was really impressive. Something a bit different, a bit cheeky chappie mixed with the darkness of a Jacques Brel. This song is about moving to London, which apparently James never got round to doing ....

Live Review: The Staves - Pepper Canister Church, Friday 13th Sept

A love affair blossomed between myself and The Staves's harmonious folk music in the beautiful, atmospheric Pepper Canister Church in Dublin last night that'll last a very long time.

Special guest James Canty performed a very solid set of tunes is a Frank Turner meets Leonard Cohen kind of way. The Billericky artist has a number of very good tune that deserve your attention.

The Staves gave a masterclass performance of their debut album "Dead & Born & Grown" where you felt this was a special night for Watford sisters. Their harmonies are stunning live, sending shivers down my spine on many occasions. The album sounded wonderful live in a space perfect for the charming folk music from the band. Everything was perfect and enabled me to relax, get into a somber mood and tune into each and every song.

Standout tracks for me last night were 'Mexico' that was written in Liverpool, 'Facing West' which got a big cheer from the crowd and 'Eagle Song'. However I adored 'Icarus' in the set which was dedicated to Myles O'Reilly who made a video of The Staves performing Icarus in St. Stephen's Green in Dublin and can be seen below.

The Staves have the right mix of contemporary songs which nod back to the British folk traditions as well as them stunning vocals. I genuinely can't wait to see The Staves again in concert and I'm eagerly awaiting album number two.

Live Review: Ailie Blunnie - The Grand Social Thurs 12th Sept

Ailie Blunnie, from Carrick On Shannon in the Midlands of Ireland launched her debut EP entitled 'On Love ... and other Murder Mysteries' in fine style in The Grand Social last night. It's been ages since I was at such a relaxed, funny, entertaining and stylish gig as Ailie Blunnie's in Dublin's The Grand Social.

Photos by Anto Kane: http://www.antokanephotography.com/

Ailie Blunnie is a superb performer, singer and songwriter who'll be forever compared to Regina Spektor or a Julie Feeney but with a funny quirky personality that oozes charm and demands your attention. I've found a new favourite Irish artist in Ailie.

With the risk of being accused of championing, I'm going to come out with a bold statement that last night's gig was the perfect EP launch. Without a support act, Ailie and her band played a varied set of 'Murder Ballads', lullabies, well placed covers and those lyrically perfect quirky tracks that were brought to life last night. Backed by a fantastic rhythm section of drums and double bass as well as Ailie's sister Róisín on keys and two backing vocalists, the band were on top form all evening. A mid set collection of ballads were enhanced by the arrival on stage of Vyvienne Long on cello. The best song in the set was the anti-love song 'Whiskey & Ice' which I adored. Other standout songs in the set were the closing song 'Monsters', the very funny older song of Ailie's entitle 'We Women' and this fine track 'Coming To get Ya' which is the opening track of the EP:

Apart from the music, the most enjoyable aspect of the gig was the fun between song banter between the sisters on stage that was very organic and funny. This along with the lyrics of Ailie's songs made me chuckle and laugh the whole night through. There's a no holds barred attitude to Ailie's lyrics that I love. The lyrics draw you in and the music envelopes you to great effect. This is a superb band that I hope is able to build a good fan-base off the back of this wonderful EP.
