Ruby Tuesday - Onya

I only discovered Onya when I began plugging the Sea Seasons gig a few weeks back. I think Rock Chick Onya has massive potential to make it big. This tune Let's Get Naked should bring great success to Onya:

http://www.myspace.com/onyamusic

From her biography:

"Onya, aka Aine O’ Doherty comes from Bundoran, County Donegal, a popular surf town on Ireland’s North-West Coast.
Onya’s contemporary style and irrepressible attitude have made her a very popular, original and interesting singer-songwriter.

Raised in a musical family, and falling in love with the spotlight at a tender age in the family music –bar, she became well known to Irish audiences touring the college circuit with guitar in hand. After a very successful run in an Irish TV talent competition, she became a full time musician, joined forces with Musicminders Management, and began touring. In 2005 she hit the USA, road-testing her impressive song collection to an American audience. She travelled to New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin, Dallas, San Diego & Boston, performing in venues such as The Roxy, Los Angeles and CBGB’s in Manhattan , festivals and sessions, College gigs and pub appearances.

She returned to Ireland in 2007, and selected 20 songs to demo for her debut CD. She continued to perform live, touring Europe and the US again, doing a residency in Las Vegas on the way. She recorded a 20-track demo titled’Secrets and Lies’ in her home town of Bundoran. These twenty songs are the songs most requested at her gigs, and most downloaded on her myspace, bebo & sonicbids sites. She was selected as Ireland's most promising young songwriter in the RTE series 'This Note's for you'. She was also featured on Dave Fannings 'The Last Broadcast' and TG4 ' Pop4'.

In 2008 she returned to Los Angeles and selected the tracks for her debut CD 'Secrets and Lies'. Released on Indy label 'Musicminders', it is now on sale on iTunes. Onya had an excellent tour of the USA from Jan-Mar 08 including major gigs in Los Angeles, San Diego, 8 showcases @ SXSW, Memphis & New York City,

In July 2008 Onya won the Brendan Graham Songwriting award. She was also a finalist in the prestigious Clonmel Song Contest2008. THe album 'Secrets & Lies' was selected by Virgin Airlines for airplay 2009. In October 2008 she toured Europe, and went into studio in November 2008 to begin her second album, ‘Little Diva’.

She has written and recorded most of the tracks for the next album, titled with Dublin-based producer, Gareth Mannix. This album features Onya's 'Little Diva' in full pop mode, with a collection of radio-friendly chick rock. Now working with a full band, these songs reveal Onya’s potential as a serious contender for a major breakthrough in ’09.

Onya’s style combines the poetic lyricism of the Irish with a very contemporary and rock-chick attitude. The debut album 'Secrets and Lies' was written over the course of Onya’s early years, and draws from her experiences as a modern woman from a country moving rapidly from rural to celtic tiger.
The current album, 'Little Diva' excavates Onya’s experiences in America, particularly in California - the irrisistible lure of bright lights and fame, and the fine line between discovery and disappointment, the demands of the radio stations, the TV producers for instantly attractive power-pop anthems."

Phew.... check out the following:

Taken from this years SXSW!

Onya has many covers on YouTube including this Janis Joplin hit:

Ruiri Coogan Update

Last Tuesday I wrote passionately about Ruiri Coogan in the Ruby Tuesday feature:

"We seen Ruairi [pronounced roar-ri] Coogan at the backroom sessions in Navan on the 16th March where he played four songs in an open mic session. Ruairi is not your typical singer-songwriter and certainly not the character Damien Rice sings about in the song 'Childish'. He has a friendly stage presence and great image. The tunes reminded me alot of Jasan Mraz with hints of the folky pop of Jack Johnson sung by a voice that brought to mind Chris Cornell on the Temple of the Dog album."

Well look at what's been put on YouTube, his performance from that backroom session we seen!

Folks I'd love your comments..... tell me I'm wrong about this guy or I'm right about him, tell me your thoughts..... comment me!!!!

Sunday's Summer Song - The Guggenheim Grotto

Yes folks another new weekly feature which will appear on the blog until I've had enough of the Summer. I will kick off with a Summer tune by the hardest working touring Irish band in the world at the moment. Power pop duo The Guggenheim Grotto is aiming to join Bell X1 and Lisa Hannigan riding on the crest of the wave created by the Once movie and fuelled by the U2 machine. I honestly feel that there is massive potential for Irish artists at the moment due to increased opportunities for exposure! I'm thinking fans of Once and The Swell Season are looking for at the 'similar artist' section of Amazon to discover new Irish music.

The Guggenheim Grotto - Sunshine Makes Me High

Sunshine makes me high is taken from TGG's second album from last year called 'Happy The Man'. The striking thing about band is the quality and depth of the lyrics. Along with beautiful melodies as in this tune, the result is a perfect singalong pop song.

Irish Music on the Blogsphere!

Here is my attempt of a mini aggregator of the best Irish music in the blogsphere at the moment. It's been a busy week with 22 Irish artists at SXSW in Austin, Bell X1 getting a big push in the US and new albums by Jinx Lennon and David Kitt. Oh and U2 are still getting major blogsphere coverage!

Let's say you happen to be born in the 80's and have limited knowledge of pre Joshua Tree U2 then http://myaimzistrue.blogspot.com/ is the place to go for a few decent hindsight reviews and sample mp3s of U2's first four albums!

Culture Bully has both the video clip and mp3 of The Great Defector as performed by Bell X1 on Letterman.

Many blogs have Lisa Hannigan's new video for the single I Don't Know.

State have some excellent pics of our Lisa Hannigan, One Day International and The Mighty Stef amongst others from the SXSW festival!

Also at SXSW were The Brothers Movement whose tune Blind can be found on the RCRD LBL here.

The famous Nialler9 picked David Kitt as this month's Music Alliance Pact featured Irish artist. This means that you can find a sample mp3 of his tune Move It On here.

Finally on another issue the motherboard that is HP recommended it's troops to seek out my video clip of Ham Sandwich's excellent version of Running Up That Hill from the recent Inspirations gig. Kudos to me so!

Irish Artists on YouTube - Lisa Cuthbert

Lisa Cuthbert was a featured artist on Monday Under The Covers a few months ago when she offered her version of The Cranberries Daffodil Lament as a sample mp3. Lisa has a few video clips of tunes from her forthcoming album on YouTube which showcase her excellent musical talents and her wonderful Sarah McLachlinesque voice.

http://www.myspace.com/lisacuthbert

The first clip is called Burden.....how brilliant is this?

6 May 2009 21:00 New Music Club Clonmel, Tipperary

Many Gigs on the Horizon

Of all the IRMO gigs announced during the week this has to be the best line-up. Highly recommended!

Here's the story ..... €75 for the three gigs, Mark Geary, Mark Dignam and Brendan O'Shea all with tasty special unconfirmed guests and camping. You also have access to the beautiful surroundings of Conary, Co. Wicklow as well as a program of holistic events on the Saturday and Sunday. All sounds great to me! I'm off to buy a tent!

I just found this great video for an old Pony Club single called Knees from the second album Family Business. Pony Club has a big gig in Whelans on May 1st as well as doing a few gigs around the country in April.

It's Friday, I'm In Love with Power of Dreams

This is the beginning of the new Friday feature, where I post a sample Love Song from the vaults of the Irish Music Scene. The Power of Dreams kick us off with an anti-love song; Maire I Don't Love You. The tune appeared on the debut album from 1990 called Immigrants, Emmigrants & Me.

The Power of Dreams line-up for the 1990 Immigrants, Emmigrants & Me was:
Craig Walker - guitars/vocals
Keith Walker - drums
Michael Lennox - bass
additional guitars by Robbie Callan

The Power of Dreams had five great years with the release of five brilliant albums. They toured extensively and released four studio albums and a host of EPs and singles. They stood out from the early Brit Pop/Shoegazer bands because they were a really good band with excellent tunes, melodies and vocals. However they suffered a bit by being in the shadow of MY Bloody Valentine!

Something For The Weekend - Sean Needham

This week it's the turn of Denmark resident Sean Needham who released a pretty impressive debut in 2004. His website states:

"With a music style that has been compared to Ben Harper and Paul Weller, Seán released his debut album entitled Loosely Based On A True Story in Ireland in April 2004. Since then Sean has been bringing his blend of upbeat acoustic rock to audiences across the country.

Seán has scored innumerable tour support slots with major artists. Tracy Chapman asked Seán to open for her in Belfast. Following his performance that night, she invited him to support her on her three Dublin shows at the Olympia.

Ladsysmith Black Mambazo founder and lead man Joseph Shabalala blessed Seán before the first of the four gigs he supported them on and then invited Seán to join them on stage for some Zulu warrior dancing!

The Hothouse Flowers asked Seán on-stage to perform on Don’t Go. During Seán’s support slots, Liam joined in on-stage to play bodhran and sing backing vocals on one of Seán’s tracks."

So yeah Sean is very good and has a few tracks on his website to sample:

Iain Archer - To The Pine Roots Album Review

Iain Archer is an artist from Bangor, Northern Ireland, who was once a secondary lyricist within the indie band Snow Patrol and is basking in the royalties coming from co-writing Leoan Lewis' massive hit 'Run'. However don't let that fact put you off because Iain's music is a million suns away from that of Snow Patrol!

I think this is a great album. I can hear a worthy successor to Elliot Smith in the songs, melodies, tunings and lyrics. At 39 minutes in lenght and with 9 songs, 'To The Pine Roots' is a sweet delight of folky pop tunes which can either function as background music at home or full on attentive listening. The album includes 'That' stand-out track which gets the repeat treatment. Frozen Lake is five minutes of pure perfect love all wrapped up in a song.

Iain Archer - To The Pine Roots [10 out of 12]

If you happen to be discovering Iain Archer's brilliance now you will be happy to know there is a decent sized back catalogue to discover including the side-project 'The Reindeer Section'

Ruby Tuesday - Ruairi Coogan

This week's Ruby Tuesday artist is a bit special. For a start this happens to be post 200 for the blog! Also this artist Ruairi Coogan is so fresh and new to the Irish music scene his MySpace is barely a week old, there's no YouTube clips and at the moment of writing there is no music available on the net to either download or stream. It's my little attempt to become the first to pick up on Ruairi's talent before he becomes a superstar! [.... I wonder when Simon Cowell will retire!]

We seen Ruairi [pronounced roar-ri] Coogan at the backroom sessions in Navan on the 16th March where he played four songs in an open mic session. Ruairi is not your typical singer-songwriter and certainly not the character Damien Rice sings about in the song 'Childish'. He has a friendly stage presence and great image. The tunes reminded me alot of Jasan Mraz with hints of the folky pop of Jack Johnson sung by a voice that brought to mind Chris Cornell on the Temple of the Dog album.

I hope that description made sense. Listening to them few songs I just got a feeling that Ruairi has something different. An x-factor maybe? I'll keep the blog up to date with any future gigs he has planned. Some demos will be appearing on his myspace real soon.

Music News Round-up

Firstly if you can, get to Whelans early on Wednesday to catch blog favourites Heritage Centre supporting the brilliant Alphastates. Should be a great night.

Blog tip for the top act Aortal are no more. Talented singer James O'Toole has decided to put his musical career on hold to become a full time socialist and activist. All the best to James but this to me sums up what is wrong with the whole internet/facespace/twatter thing! Sometimes too much information is given! Before the net, James could have privately decided to put career on hold, did his thing with the socialists, become disillusioned with the movement and 'reform' the band without fear of being ridiculed! Hopefully we will see Aortal back in some form in the near future.

Wanna go see two wonderful Irish artists in Whelans for nothing? No.... you dont have to sleep with a drummer to get on the guestlist...... The Brain Canavan and Bill Coleman gig is free in on Tuesday 7th April in an interesting move. PWYL is a 'Pay What You Like' experiment where you won't pay when you enter but when you leave you pay what you feel is a fair amount! Brian Canavan wrote an excellent blog today over on his MySpace where he talks about the difficulty Irish music scene.

http://www.myspace.com/briancanavan

That week in April I might well be busy in Whelans with Ise playing there on Wednesday 8th April. Ise is another amazing singer and performer who I hope to hear more from in the future. Ise is perfoming in Whelans with Lisa O'Neill and The Ragman.

Monday Under The Covers - It Was A Wicked Game

The best thing about the Rugby on Saturday was that it meant there was a real alternative to conversations about the recession, strikes and the bankers! I know the song Wicked Game is one of the best lovesongs ever written but in these parts a 'Wicked Game' is how we would describe last Saturday's Rugby match. Long may those conversations last!

Sunday's Seven Degrees of the Grand Slam 2009

What a match to give Ireland the Grand Slam in Rugby. I'm tempted to say it was the most exhilerating two hours of my life! In honour of the great win I give you this report and these sample songs!

Ireland had beaten France, Italy, England and Scotland before the match yesterday. This set up a winner takes all match with Wales where we would win the Grand Slam [unbeaten in 6 nations] if we managed to beat the Welsh in Wales.

Extraordinary by Brendan O'Shea

It's been 61 years since Ireland last won the Grand Slam. Was this to be our year? Is it the dream of every Irish Rugby Fan to see Ireland win the Grand Slam?

Running In Dreams by Iain Archer

Many people felt that this year was the final year for some of Ireland's veteran players like John Hayes, Marcus Horan, Ronan O'Gara and captain Brian O'Driscoll to win a Grand Slam. Many journalists were questioning Brian O'Driscoll's ability prior to this year's six nations!

Captain by Martin Finke

Onto the match and my god it was amazing ...........

Isn't It Amazing by The Hothouse Flowers

With 5 mins left Ireland were losing, then with 2 minutes left Ireland was back in front after a drop-goal from O'Gara. As the clock counted down, a last minute penalty went to Wales. If Stephen Jones scored, Irish Hearts would have been broken!

But he missed, Ireland won the match 17-15, we began celebrating and the Irish players must have felt like the

Irish Artists on YouTube - Shaz Oye

One of the best albums I bought in the last year was the 2006 debut from Shaz Oye titled: 'Truth According To Shaz Oye'. Shaz is close to finishing her second album with the first single called 'Surrender' almost ready for release. All this means that Shaz is ready to gig Ireland with details to follow asap! Shaz's voice is amazing and I can't wait to catch her performing live soon.

Martin Finke - Make Daylight Review

Make Daylight is the 7th studio album from Martin Finke since his home recorded debut in 1999 and it's a superb album. The much travelled performer having lived in Galway, Boston and now residing in San Francisco has created an album worthy of your attention. Martin has a distinct voice which finds me attentive to every lyric within the various soundscapes on the album. Those lyrics are mini compositions about love, relationships, motivations, despair and life amongst many other themes. The 11 tracks range from Martin's take on a singer-songwriter song such as 'Make You Sing' and 'Bad Wine' to the electronic pop of 'Stay' and 'Brendan Gardens'.

To me, an album becomes special if you can connect with the album either musically or lyrically. Make Daylight for me at present is that album. This album is a must if your a Jape or David Kitt fan while it could easily be the male equivalent to Beth Orton's Trailer Park album. Another obvious comparison to Martin Finke is Jose Gonzales. Fingers crossed Sony grabs hold of Make Daylight for future advertisements.

St. Pat's Day Blogsphere Aggregator

The blogsphere is a great place to wander around on special occasions such as Valentines Day, Mothers Day, Christmas and St. Patricks Day. Here are the best blog posts I found celebrating Irish Music on the net:

http://coverlaydown.com/ finds Boyhowdy celebrating the folkier side of U2 with a post of U2 covers by folk artists. Find tunes by Luka Bloom, Bell X1, The Walls and many more.

http://troubledsoulsunite.blogspot.com/ is a great Pearl Jam inspired blog. The blog contains tunes by Thin Lizzy, The Pogues and Flogging Molly.

http://your-moment-of-zen.blogspot.com/ has Jon writing a little mini feature on Irish Artists called 'Irish Eyes Are Smiling' where Mark Dignam, The Devlins, Bell X1 and The Pogues are the subjects!

One of the very best blogs http://thevinylvillain.blogspot.com/ features a nice selection of Irish artists including Fatima Mansions, The Frank and Walters and Luka Bloom covering Radiohead!

The Pogues, The Dubliners and The Clancy Brothers get featured over at http://www.settingthewoodsonfire.com/2009/03/happy-st-patricks-day.html

Leaving the best for last....... Kevin over at Mp3hugger celebrated our national day by being in a positive mood while staring at the bottom of an empty pint glass. Kevin posted a brilliant version of 'Here Comes The Good Times' by Dave Couse. I want to believe the good times are in the future!

Many Gigs on the Horizon

Ok maybe not the horizon.... but the next few days presents some decent gigs;

Peter Doran - 19th March: Bewleys Theatre €10

Peter is excellent singer-songwriter and musician who will be showcasing material from his second album due out later this year. Well worth checking out.

The Minutes - 20th March: Backroom Sessions in the Lantern Bar Navan €7

The Minutes are playing Navan in Friday after supporting the brilliant Austrailian band You Am I in Whelans on St. Patricks Night. I was at the Backroom sessions on Monday night and really impressed with the venue. Not too small but cosy, with a decent sized stage and great sound.

Doctor Millar - 21st March: Bewleys Theatre €15

Irish music legend Doctor [Sean] Millar is playing a third night in recent weeks in the venue to showcase new material from an EP released on cassette. A proper legend!

Monday Under The Covers - Fame by Fred

Last December saw the release of a new 'Even Better Than ...' covers album with a difference from The Ray D'Arcy Show on Today FM! Taken from the website:

"After a three year hiatus, the 'Even Better Than...' series is back with a vengeance…. and a twist!

Over the past two years, Ray has asked his musical guests to conjure up their own takes on disco classics and the best of these sessions now sees the light of day as ‘Even Better Than The Disco Thing’.

The album contains 14 classic disco tracks performed by some of the best contemporary Irish artists.

Tracks include: Ring My Bell performed by Director

Upside Down perfomed by Lisa Hannigan

Jive Talkin' performed by Republic of Loose

I Feel Love performed by Cathy Davey

Hot Stuff performed by Jape

I Feel For You performed by Duke Special

As with all the other albums in the series, proceeds from the sale of 'Even Better Than The Disco Thing' will benefit charity, in this case The National Children’s Hospital and Barretstown, both of whom help and encourage the youngest and most vulnerable in our society.

‘Even Better Than The Disco Thing’ is available to buy in all music shops and in the Today FM Online Shop."

I bought the album when it was released and have listened to it in the car from time to time. Some of the tunes are a bit poor; can't stand Hot Stuff but there are some classic tunes! Staying Alive by Jack L is amazing and so is this version of Fame by every one's favourite band from Co. Cork, Fred. To these ears Fame is the best cover I have heard from an Irish artist since Maps by Duke Special!

Gemma Hayes - Home

Remember those days when an artist would release an album with a single, then do a bit of touring and waiting a little to release the killer brilliant amazing second single? These days bands are expected to release an album, four singles and do 2 world tours in the space of a year! Not so our Gemma Hayes who has just released the second single 'Home' from her third album 'The Hollow of the Morning'. Home to me is her best piece of work ever. The video is super and makes me long for the summer!

Irish Bands on YouTube - Self Aid?

With our national day approaching and our country in a mess with nearly a half a million unemployed is it worth asking the question...

SHOULD THERE BE ANOTHER SELF AID?

Self Aid was a benefit concert held in Dublin, Ireland on 17 May 1986. The purpose of the concert was to highlight the chronic unemployment problem in Ireland at the time, with nearly 250,000 people unemployed. The 14 hour concert was the largest that had ever been staged in Ireland. All of the musicians below donated their time free of charge.

Auto Da Fe
Bagatelle
Big Self
Blue in Heaven
The Boomtown Rats
Paul Brady
Chris de Burgh
Cactus World News
The Chieftains
Clannad
De Danann
Rory Gallagher
The Fountainhead
In Tua Nua
Les Enfants
Light A Big Fire
Christy Moore
Van Morrison
Moving Hearts
The Pogues
Chris Rea
Scullion
Brush Shiels
Stockton's Wing
Thin Lizzy
Those Nervous Animals
U2
Freddie White
Elvis Costello

We do need a self aid for 2009, don't we? Phoenix Park this time?

Something For The Weekend - Bill Coleman

This Friday feature is about bringing quality Irish Music on the net to your attention in order to set in motion that weekend feeling!

This week it's the turn of the excellent Bill Coleman who is almost ready to release his second album. The debut from 2007 'I'll Tear My Own Walls Down' is one of the best Irish albums made in recent years. Bill is a great songwriter and storyteller who deserves your attention. On his website he has a number of sample tunes available which includes a new tune 'I Want You To Know'.

I Want You To Know

The Pull Of The Pint

Fight No More

Bill is supporting the excellent Brian Canavan Upstairs in Whelans on Tuesday 7th April.

St. Paddy's Eve Free Gig in Navan

I was originally planning to go see the Butterfly Explosion gig in Whelans on St. Patrick's Eve but I'm having a re-think due to the free gig organised in The Lantern Bar in Navan. St. Paddy's Eve is a whole 15 years since I met my future wife so we are thinking a night of singer-songwriters is better than a packed Whelans. I'm sure Whelans will be a sell out for Butterfly Explosion and A Lazarus Soul.

Performing on Monday are Joy Booth, Peadar Farrelly, Barry Mc'Auley, Eugene Donegan, Ruairi Coogan with more to be announced!

Smile by Joy Booth is brilliant!

Jinx Lennon Sugar Club 19th March

Trauma Themes Idiot Times is the new album from Jinx Lennon released on 20th March 2009 and it could well become the soundtrack of obsessive, depressive, recessionary Ireland! I might have to go to The Sugar Club next week!

James Sullivan's Album This Is Joy

James Sullivan is close to agreeing a publishing deal with a New York based company which should see great things happening to him. James produces music in the Celtic mysticism genre. If you can imagine a cross between Enya and Liam O'Maonlai then you come close to James' sound. James has recently decided to give his album away for free download from his website where you can download the whole album as a zip file of individual mp3s:

http://jamessullivanmusic.com

Reflections on a Year of Blogging

I began the Mixtape4Melfi blog on 1st March 2008 in the hope of speading the word about great music I thought were at times ignored by the majority of the Blogsphere. I changed to the Irish Music only blog 2 U I Bestow to solidify the identity and objective of what I was trying to do. The feature I'm most proud of is the Ruby Tuesday feature where I give a small insight to a new artist trying to make it in the difficult music world. Here is the Best Of Ruby Tuesday:

Wayne Brennan is an interesting artist who I'm going to predict will have an amazing career ahead of him. Wayne creates wonderful music that is rather difficult to describe. Armed with a Spanish guitar he can at times sound similar to Rodreigo Y Gabrielle but with other tunes he is like an Irish Newton Faulkner.

http://www.myspace.com/waynebrennan

Hong Kong born Kiernan who grew up in Limerick is now making friends all over America plugging the debut album Perfect People Are Boring. In 2007 he released his first official single in Ireland called “Borderline” which went to number 3 on the Irish download charts. It sounds like Kiernan has been heavily influenced by the likes of Dave Matthews, Ben Harper and John Mayer which produces a John Butler trio sound. Kiernan is one of many irish artists at this year's SXSW in Austin, Texas.

I love bands with a female singer like Alphastates or Rilo Kiley. Joining this list is the band 'I Am Not Lefthanded'. I cannot recommend them enough. The band are Kathryn - Vocals/Guitar, Daniel - Vocals/Bass and Benji - Drums and sound like Natalie Merchant fronting U2. Download their single Long Goodbyes for free from their website!

http://www.iamnotlefthanded.com/

The Gorgeous Colours are fecking brilliant. This seems to be the general consensus of anyone interested in the Irish indie music scene! Who am I to disagree? The Dublin five peice have released a self-titled debut album of nine songs which will appeal to fans of Calexico, Arcade Fire, and TV on the Radio. It is indie rock at it's best. The singing is a joy to listen to, the melodies are superb (esp Locksmith) and the quality and variety of the music is impressive.

Dublin is Sound!

I got an email from www.wornfree.com plugging their Iggy Pop t-shirts! I was about to hit the report spam button because as we all know Iggy isn't renowned for wearing any top! This LA based company resurrects the coolest T-Shirts of all time.

They reproduce shirts worn by such Legends as John Lennon, Joey Ramone, Frank Zappa, Debbie Harry, Gram Parsons, Johnny Ramone Jeff Buckley, Joan Jett and now Kurt Cobain to name but a few!

The t-shirts are a bit pricey but look so cool especially the Dublin Sound t-shirt that Iggy wore!

RIP Fabchannel.com

Wow in recent months and weeks we have read about excellent music bloggers calling it a day and now I find out the excellent online resource Fabchannel.com is to close.

You only have a couple of days to watch a 2002 concert from The Prayer Boat, two concerts by The Frames, Damien Rice or Declan O'Rourke gigs!

Ruby Tuesday - My Brother Woody

Ruby Tuesday is my weekly feature where I blog about a new emerging talent on the scene. This week I'm blogging about a band who released their debut album in 2007. My Brother Woody's album 'It's a long way from that sort of thing you were raised' is to me a lost gem. I never realised how great this album is! Think of a Beach Boys inspired modern pop classic with great vocals and inspiring lyrics and you have some idea of what this album offers. If you like The Magic Numbers, Belle & Sebastian or Hal then My Brother Woody would be a perfect addition to your collection.

My Brother Woody - Wish I Was A DJ

My Brother Woody performed a Christmas gig in Whelans but has been very quiet of late. This blogger hopes that a new album is on he way real quick.

Monday Under The Covers - Glen's Does Fogtown

The main influence on my decision to begin a music blog was the when Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova won the Oscar for best original song in a movie for 'Falling Slowly'. It was a moment that justified me telling everyone who would listen that Glen was a musical and lyrical genius. That Mic Christopher, Mark Dignam, Paddy Casey, Gemma Hayes et al deserve to be known and to an extent make a decent living from their exceptional talent. One of my favourite bands from the early 1990's were The Mary Janes fronted by the missed legend of Mic Christopher. On 18 November 2001 in the Netherlands, after he had played his set, Christopher was found unconscious, having apparently struck his head on some steps following a fall. On arrival at a local hospital, he was found to have lapsed into a coma as a result of severe swelling to the brain. He never regained consciousness and died on 29 November 2001, aged 32. His memory lives on in those who knew him best. At the recent Swell Season charity gig Glen dedicated 'Fogtown' to Mic.

Irish Bands on YouTube - Inspirations Gig 27th Feb

The inspirations gig was an excellent showcase of Irish talent and was a great night. I was massively impressed with most of the bands who gave up their time free of charge in aid of the wonderful charity Barretsown for sick children.

The highlights for me were:

Ham Sandwich - Running Up That Hill

The Walls - Everything is Broken

The Kinetics - I Will Follow

Sinéad O'Connor with Republic of Loose - You Can't Do That

U2 on Letterman

Highly entertaining clips!

Padraig Rushe - Greyworld Review

Padraig Rushe is a former member of the Dublin Gospel Choir who has just released his debut album called Greyworld. The album is a pleasant mixture of Rock, Pop and Soul which should appeal to fans of Paddy Casey, David Gray or Laura Izibor. The album was produced by Pat Donne who recorded albums by Paddy Casey and Mark Dignam.

The main strength of the album is Padraig’s strong vocals. On the more soulful tracks like Lord My Lover & Me, Padraig’s voice carries the song along and makes the very average song sound good. The album however excels on tracks such as the title track and Old Beginnings where Padraig’s vocal harmonies play off the guest female vocal harmonies to produce the most beautifully crafted pop songs I have heard this year. Greyworld is a strong debut album with some brilliant tunes which should form the foundation to a great pop career for Padraig Rushe.
