Choice Music Prize 2011

Album Review: Lisa Cuthbert - Obstacles

Piano based debut album of big anthems from a great singer. There's much to admire on this record! Last week I received an email which described my writing on the blog as simplistic yet sophisticated! I'll try to review Obstacles in the same way. I'll state from the beginning that in general the album didn't do much for me. I didn't get that warm glow you tend to get when listening to music you enjoy. However there is so much to be admired on Lisa Cuthbert's debut. Obstacles is packed full of big anthems. I love how the short opening track runs seamlessly into the second song! Many of the tracks hit the five minute mark with a couple past seven minutes. There's big orchestral songs on this album with delicate pieces of piano bookending the songs. Obstacles flirts with progressive rock, pop, Kate Bush era 80's music and could also be described as Enyaesque. On some tracks the music reminds me of a Broadway soundtrack. Compulsion's album Comforter was the first time I realised that an Irish band could produce music on a par with everything else I was listening to at the time. I think it was when Pearl Jam's Vs album was on repeat play in my teenage bedroom that Comforter found a home in my life. They were a punk influenced indie alternative act who probably suffered from the 'sound like Nirvana' tag! Here's some background info: In 1992 Compulsion was formed by Joey Barry also known as Joseph Mary. Joining him were Sid Rainey and Garrett 'Jacknife' Lee, all of whom had played together in Thee Amazing Colossal Men. The band recruited Jan Willem Alkema from Holland on drums. The Compulsion EP was released in 1992 while in 1993 the band released two more singles before Comforter was released in 1994 with the lead single being mall Monarchy. A Little Mistake was one of the three b-sides on that single: A Little Mistake Officially Compulsion only released two albums. Comforter
