Single Review: Changing Trains - Won't Let You Down

Single Review:

Changing Trains - Won't Let You Down
by Peter Nagle

'Won't Let You Down' is an incredible debut single from this Limerick band 'Changing Trains'. The vocals are at times breathtaking, it's delicate moments shine through, there's not a note out of place and it's full of promise for this new Irish band. 'Won't Let You Down' is the best song from an Irish band I've heard in a very long time.

Taken from the forthcoming album ‘Theory of Everything’, by Limerick band Changing Trains, this is the official music video for the debut single ‘Won’t Let You Down’ available to download from all major online stores from Friday January 30th 2015.

Live Review: Marc O'Reilly & The Hard Ground - St. Werburgh's Church, Jan 28th

Live Review: Marc O'Reilly & The Hard Ground

St. Werburgh's Church, Jan 28th

written by Peter Nagle

This double headline gig from Waterford's Marc O'Reilly & his band and Cork's The Hard Ground in the wonderful space of St. Werburgh's Church was a perfect way to kick off the Temple Bar Trad Festival for this reviewer.

It was Marc O'Reilly who began last night's gig with 'You Never' and a stunning version of 'An African Day'. His band joined Marc on stage for a set list weighing heavily from the debut album 'My Friend Marx'. It meant me hearing old favourites such as 'La Question', 'Scottish Widow' and 'Hail' live for the first time from that awesome first album. Check out this video taken by Shannon Flanagan of Marc and his band performing 'Get Back'.

Marc and his band was simply stunning last night. He's a fantastic musician and songwriter with two great albums and a long future ahead of him.

The Hard Ground followed soon after and were highly entertaining throughout. Their set of mainly new material showcased the amazing vocals of Marlene Enright as well as displaying the fine musicianship from the tight band. Some songs came and went without much fanfare but others such as the new song 'Pucker' and 'Belles and Beaux' really hit home.

The band flirt with many genres such as rock, pop, folk as well as a dark deep south sound on many tracks. It's only when Marlene is allowed time to breath life into the songs that I really warm to The Hard Ground. All that being said, I'm looking forward to the new album released on April 10th.

Overall it was a great showcase of music from two of Ireland's best music acts:

Album Review: August Wells - A Living and a Dying Game

Album Review: August Wells - A Living and a Dying Game

Released in the Summer of 2014, 'A Living and a Dying' game from the new band formed by Ken Griffin is a work of magnificent songwriting that's kept me company to and from work since Christmas. It's simply stunning from start to finish with tales of getting old, sad love songs and epic observations of the ordinary.

It's hard to pinpoint why an album like this from August Wells hits all the right spots. Every song has a point, theme and purpose. Every backing instrument such as piano, violins, french horn and the wonderful trumpet has it's place to enhance the vocals and lyrics of vocalist and songwriter Ken Griffin.

Album highlights include the two tracks you can play here along with 'Dancing' and 'Dying's Not Worth Living For'. Overall there's not a poor track on this album. It really is a modern masterpiece of songwriting that deserves to be found by you.

Interview: Whistle

Interview: Whistle

1. Who are you?
We are Whistle - not sure of the origin of the name, but rumour has it that it is the last band name in the world. We’ve been together since the fall of the Berlin Wall, or was it the Ballymun Towers? Definitely before the fall of the Anglo Irish Bank anyway. Des plays a mean guitar, slammed up against Carl’s bad, bad banjo. Jerome will try anything for a tune at the speed of a mandolin. The Reverend Andy walks that bass right through everything, and Enid whups it up good on that there fiddle where Southern Charlotte used to be. Soon, we’ll be adding Cuban beats from Fralan to replace the mighty Sean who has moved to Kilkenny and then we’ll be unstoppable.

2. Where are you based?
We’re based in a garage in the town they call Ash, in the badlands of the N3 Dublin North West Passage. The devil himself won’t go there, ‘cos you can’t get at the 2-bar heater.

3. What achievements do you want me to know about?
There’s a lot of stuff we’d rather you didn’t know about, but we’ve spread the message far and wide this last three years or so. We are most proud of playing at the last two Electric Picnic weekends, especially as our invitations to play were based on word of mouth and people seeing us live. We’re also proud of not having any band fights for the last 3 years!

4. What are you up to now?

Now, now? Makin’ buns, man. Makin’ buns. We’re also touting for some gigs, and already have a number of dates lined up for the next few weeks. We are also planning to finally get some professional recording done this year as it’s the one thing we are really lacking right now. Also hoping to get more of our original music into our sets.

5. Name something unique about you or/and your product?

It’s that great mix of mix of originals, the newer folk/country stuff, the old bluegrass and country song and the vocal harmonies that really gets people’s attention when we play live and lets us stand out a little from other bands.

6. What is the best song ever written?

Jerome: Down With The Shine – them Avett Brothers, they’re cookin’ with gas.

Des: No idea – reluctant to hang my hat on any one song when there are so many brilliant ones out there. I don’t really do favourites, as the favourite would change every day.

Andy: Impossible question!

7. What's the best album ever made?

Jerome: Pale Green Ghosts – John Grant. Dayum.

Des: It hasn’t been made yet, but we’re getting there slowly - may even get it recorded this year!

Andy: Doubley impossible!

8. What are your future plans?

Short term - Get to the top of that queue – the quest for coffee is never over.

Medium Term – Play lots and lots of gigs this year and in between those get some decent recordings and videos done.

Long term – to release albums of original material, to bring as many amazing cover songs that people haven’t heard out of the wilderness as it’s possible to do, play for as many people as possible in the short time left to us on this green earth and the ultimate goal – to keep loving doing this as much as we are now.

9. Where can I spend money on you or your product?

Wait a while – we’ll get back to you on that. We have plans in the pot for video and recordings this year, seriously we want to get our originals down quick, and start giving them the life they deserve after they’ve served us so well up to now.

In the meantime just come out and see our shows – you can buy us a pint in any of the fine venues we play around the town – a Rebel Red would do nicely thanks!

Album review: - Zack Boone - Somewhere Beyond [Reviewed by RHR]

Album review: - Zack Boone - Somewhere Beyond
Review by RHR

Right so, here I am with my first review for Ceol Collective and I get given this very interesting album "Zack Boone - Somewhere Beyond". The first thing I notice upon opening the email is the moody look of the album cover, it's a strong statement from an artist I haven't heard before, in fact it intrigues me to the music style of the artist. So I hit the aul play button and give it a good listen.

The first thing to note about this album is the intro song, "Stay With Me Tonight", funnily enough its the first thing that most people would note, but, what makes me sit up and listen is that its a full nine minutes and thirty one seconds long. If you enjoy vocoded/auto tuned vocals then this would be right up your alley, it seems like a nod to Daft punks "Discovery" album which is an album I really didn't take to. If I was listening to this on a tape deck, the first thing I would do is make sure that the batteries are good and that the deck hadn't chewed the fuck out of the tape. The lyrics are blended seamlessly into the vocoder so much so that I found it difficult to make out what was being said/sung. At 9.31 that's enough time to make three soft boiled eggs, one after the other, in quick succession and butter your toast.

The next track "Memories of the future" is eight minutes and thirty two seconds long and has guest vocals from Stephen Hawkins in this dreamy pop synth ladened number. Again I found it hard to make out the lyrics in this track, but, I do think Professor Hawkins is reading a couple of paragraphs from his best selling book "A Brief History of Time"..the irony here is that there is nothing brief about the track at a full 8.32. About 4 minutes in the track does break down to show that Zack does have some potential as an ambient, moody & easy listening musician.

After almost 20 minutes of two opening tracks I found it difficult to get into the rest of the album even after a couple of listens. There are a few tracks worth mentioning that do stand out, notably "I Miss You", "Come Back Lover" ,"Beautiful", "Ellis Island" (A really nice instrumental) & my personal favourite "Begin". There is a certain angst and longing that wont be lost on the listener as Zack's music & lyrics do come across with emotion aplomb.

Overall the only consistency in this album is the inconsistency. It feels like an artist who is struggling with his identity and or direction that they wanted to go in with the recording. I honestly think Zack had gotten distracted with toys and effects during the production part of the album. "Somewhere Beyond", in it's entirity is well produced and does show all the hall marks of someone who cares about and is passionate about their music.  I think Zack Boone as a musician & writer of moody, ambient songs is quite good all he needs to do is rid himself of the over rated vocoder and drop Professor Hawkins from the next album.

Interview: Callum Browne from Little L Records

1.     Who are you?

Hi! My name is Callum and I run Little L Records!

2. Where are you based?

We're based in Carlow!

3. What achievements do you want me to know about?

Hmm, we've done a few cool things! One of the biggest things that always gets me excited when doing this is the artists we work with and have worked with!

4. What are you up to now?

A few of the artists we've worked with in the past are doing some really amazing things, people like Shamir, who's just signed to XL Recordings and Homeshake, who's put out an amazing album with Sinderlyn. Other than this, I'm always really hyped for pressing vinyl, which we've done a couple of times. We'll have a new 7" from American Haiku coming very soon.

5.    Name something unique about your label?

I think something unique about us is the span of music we release. While I'm a big fan of a lot of labels who cultivate a particular sound or aesthethic, I wanted to go into this doing a diverse span of music. As a result we've done everything from free-jazz to post-metal.

Another unique thing that we're somewhat known for is our spray-painted tape designs!

6. What is the best song ever written?

Oh man, this is a tricky one. At the moment I'm very very partial to saying that Monster Machismo's "Kiss Kiss Pessimist" is a modern masterpiece.

7. What's the best album ever made?

Another tough question but at the moment, as a full work I will always put The Mars Volta's "Deloused in the Comatorium" super high up in the list! It feels so full from start to finish and it's been something I always have come back to for years.

8. What are your future plans?

We have a load of new releases coming up!

We have releases from Ghost in a Sundress, Vejgaard Ambient, Moon > Sun and a split from Goshawk/Monsters of The Antipodes and This City Called Earth coming up, just to name a few!

We also have a lot more vinyl happening soon, including a lovely ambient split from Lost Trail/Leaaves and Syd Kemp too!

9.   Where can I spend money on your releases?

You can download our releases over at our bandcamp where the majority of our releases are free! You can buy our CDs, tapes and records from our storenvy

Interview: Kingdom of Crows

Interview: Kingdom of Crows

1. Who are you?
A: Kingdom Of Crows

2. Where are you based?
A: Dublin. A great city for producing some of the best original music around.. including our own of course!

3. What would your dream achievement be?
A. The dream achievement or goal of the band is to be 5 or 6 albums down the line, a respected and influential band. One that has never wavered its commitment to writing music that is honest and pure and, in the timeline of music history, not to be just a moment in a trend but to be remembered.

4. What are you up to now?
A. Well we've just released or third song 'Clouds' which is accompanied by a brand new video made by Puka Productions (https://www.facebook.com/PukaProductions) who also made the video for our previous song 'Dreamless Sleep'.
The final finishing touches are being done on our debut album 'The Truth Is The Trip' and it is due for release for summer 2015. We are also rehearsing our live show and a planning on gigging across Ireland and maybe doing a few festivals in 2015.

5.Name something unique about your product?
A. I think we bring a new sound to the table that is inspired by a broad range of musical styles and not restricted to one genre. With elements of Metal, Folk, Indie, Opera, Ambient, Electro, Celtic Mysticism we hope our particular unique style will appeal to a wide audience.

6.What is the best song ever written?
A. Kingdom Of Crows - Call Of The Void obviously haha. Honestly.. wow that's a hard question , well if music is supposed to evoke an emotion or thought , then for me its and they went under a few names now but 'The Sea Nymphs - Dergo' , to me its an out an out masterpiece.

7.What's the best album ever made?
A. Well this has to be a 2 part answer. 'Dark side of the moon' stands like Mount Everest as sonically the best album ever made and most albums these days don't even come close , but for me personally its The Offsprings - Ignition album its been with me since i was single digits old!

8. What are your future plans?
A. The future plans are too release our debut album and gig as much as we can. We have a few surprise cover songs coming up too and the blueprints for a second album have been located beside a monolith near Jupiter, if that's any clue of were we might be going!

9. Where can I spend money on you or your product?
Well at the moment you can't as the songs/videos we've released so far are free on soundcloud, Breakingtunes and youtube but it would be nice to gain enough popularity to sell our upcoming album for a small charge and of course all donations are very welcome!! What would really help us though right now would be for people to follow us on facebook

and twitter https://twitter.com/kingdomofcrows and soundcloud https://soundcloud.com/kingdom-of-crows and come out and support our upcoming live shows, we would really appreciate that. We will post all the latest news on out facebook and twitter.
