Connect 4 Friday: My Favourite Cover Versions

We had a Mic Christopher tribute night in Boyles Slane last night in an attempt to turn something stupid [ie Arthurs Day] into something amazing. And amazing it was. The first hour saw some of Irelands most talented songwriters taking turns to play the whole of Mic Christopher's Skylarkin. It got me thinking of my favourite cover versions!

Gemma Hayes - No Ordinary Love

Recorded live for Today FM at the end of 2005 No Ordinary Love is performed majestically by Gemma Hayes and makes it her own. http://www.gemmahayes.com/

The Frank and Walters - Funky Cold Medina

The Franks ensured quality for money back in the day when singles were bought. They regularly included a cover version as a b-side track. The best one and crowd favourite at gigs in fun Funky Cold Medina. http://www.frankandwalters.net/

Katell Keineg - River Man

This Nick Drake classic really suits Katell's wonderful voice. I was delighted to read that Katell is playing some gigs in the UK this Autumn. http://www.katellkeineg.com/gigs.html

I got sent the debut album from Preachers Son [http://www.preachersson.com/]and it'll be reviewed real soon. Snuggled in there mid album is this wonderful tune.

I don't know why, but I was hoping the Katell Keineg was a cover of David Sylvian's "River Man", not Nick Drake's.

Oh well - it's hard to go wrong with Katell Keineg. I'd probably check it out if she did an Abba cover.
