What a week it's been.
Gerry Ryan RIP.
RTE had plans not to announce this tragic news of Gerry Ryan's death until 5pm out of respect for the family and also to give the many friends of Gerry time [limited] to be contacted. However as was commented on by many media pioneers yesterday Gerry Ryan's death will go down in social networking history as being the first major story to 'break' via tweets in Ireland. RTE made the right judgement to hold off on the announcement out of respect but the passing of information through the networks makes it impossible to 'own' and 'control' that information.
Of lesser importance .... Mp3 Blogs RIP.
In these recessionary times we are in a remarkable reversal. Money is tight and there's this massive scrap going on about how to get hold of some of that valuable money. It must be difficult for musicians to be really angry at IMRO. Sure all they are doing is trying to make the bank balance look a bit more respectful and then use this money to distribute funds back to them!
As an artist though would you not be more enraged by seeing your 9 month old album on sale for €3 in Golden Discs? [Mundy's Strawberry Blond and Wallis Bird's New Boots albums were in the bargain bin for €3 recently]. What about all the 'bloggers' who give away full albums for download? Surely that's a fight worth fighting! What about the fact that radio stations play their quota of Irish Music by playing 'Chasing Cars', 'Break Even' and 'Listen Dear' every hour of the day!
The important message IMRO needs to get is that while they might want to destroy Mp3 Blogs as they are now it will never happen because the technology is here. Going after the three big Irish blogs for money is a lame attempt at getting more revenue. It's a failure to understand the good nature that exists among this network of music fans, bloggers and musicians. [The Cast of Cheers and Mia Sparrow are a case in point!]
Look at this picture taken from http://www.informationisbeautiful.net/2010/how-much-do-music-artists-earn-online/
As an Mp3 blogger I'd like to think the samples here enable new bands to sell their album at their gigs which according to the image above is the best way to make money in this business.
Unlike Hot Press where everything is written/edited within a business model music bloggers write with passion about their love of music. Hot Press is a lame duck. They want to 'own' and 'control' music news and information so that the magazine become 'essential reading' again. This will never happen because the technology of instant information giving is here to stay.
This classic tune has some apparent lines in it!
While all this IMRO nonsense is being discussed everywhere I noticed that this gem of a music site got a make over .....

Looking great Brendan!

Words of wisdom again mr. Nagle.
Still hard to believe about Gerry. While I didn't listen to him every morning like a lot of people I still can't stop thinking about it since I heard on the 3 pm news yesterday. I can only imagine what his friends and family are going through.
