At the half-way stage of 2009 the album of the year is Garret Baker's Fading Fast. I reviewed the album some months back. The defining feature of Garret's sound for me is the soundscape atmosphere his music creates.
Last night upstairs in Whelans the excellent Margaret Healy performed a few songs from her second album Girls, Boys and Clockwork Toys. Margaret will be upstairs in Whelans this coming Sunday with her 6 man strong backing band.
Garret was aided last night by Sheena Malone on accordion and ukulele. Garret played a few new tunes last night but the majority of the set was taken from the debut 'Fading Fast'. The modest Garret played keyboard on a number of songs including my personal favourite tune 'For A Pittance'.
It was great to hear these tunes live. It was a night of listening to some fine music, to allow yourself to be either immersed in the lyrics or be transported to another space. Garret at one point mentioned how lucky he is to have recorded and released an album and to have the opportunities to put on gigs like this one. My hope is that one day musical talent would rise above press contacts, PR nonsense, favours and that the people respect and admire quality home produced music.
