Sunday's Seven Degrees of Reading

I bought this book last week for next to nothing and read it (quickly) while my twins were at Judo. The Polysyllabic Spree is a collection of book reviews Nick Hornby wrote for The Believer magazine during the years 2003 and 2004. A few things struck me while reading it. Firstly were the wise words from Nick when he advises in the introduction to stop reading a book if it's not good! Great advice! I'm often struck by hearing people saying it was a good book but I struggled through it! Why struggle? I suppose it's like music blogs, if it ain't interesting you ....move on! The second thing is that The Believer has an ethos which states that no critisism should be directed towards a book or novelist. It's for this reason I could never ever be a journalist. The thought of listening to something I don't like and then writing negative things about it? Life is too short for negativities. Listen to what you like! I am determined to begin to work my way through my collection of novels and reawaken my love of books! When I'm finished with the DVD boxsets of The Shield, The Sopranos.....oh wait The Wire too......oh and after Jack Bauer saves the world again!
